If you’re anything like me, you thought up a brilliant idea for a new business, then you thought, “How the heck am I gonna get a logo?”  I have tried and failed many different ways, but in the end, I decided to just design one myself.  So what follows is how to create a logo, by yourself or with help.

The Failed Attempts

I know what you’re wondering, this is your first time ACTUALLY starting a business, how have you had any failed attempts?  (You probably weren’t wondering that, but I’m going to answer the question anyway.)

I’ve had many “brilliant” ideas for new businesses.  When I tried to get a logo and the process didn’t work out, I lost motivation or got caught up in work and just left the idea by the way side.

In the past, I’ve asked my brother to design something for me, that fell through.  My cousin has told me about a website where you can get one designed for cheap.  That was actually a good idea.  I don’t remember what the website is for sure, but I think it’s this.  I don’t remember why that didn’t work out, but it didn’t, I’ll break it down anyway.

On Fiverr, you can design you can provide your logo idea to a designer or you can come up with a design with the help of a logo designer.  Regardless of which option you choose, you’ll be put in touch with a designer.  The first decision that you have to make is whether you already know what you want or if you’ll need a designer to help you with an idea.  If you already know, you’ll move on to this page where you’ll pick a design style.  They have a pretty good range of chooses.

Next you’ll answer some questions, like do you need an editable version and whether you’ll need to alter it’s size.  Once you answer all of the questions, you’ll be shown all of the designers that fall into the category that you’ve chosen.  Here, I chose a signature style.

rated designers

As you can see, all of the artists are rates by other customers and the prices vary.  You can choose the delivery time and the price that you prefer as well as many other things.

Creating it on your Own

I chose to design the logo myself (typical).  I used Vistaprint, they have a logo maker.  It’s not very sophisticated, but it works.  They also give you the option to work with a designer.  I chose to rough it out.  These are the options that you choose from up front.

logo starters

There are a good number of options to choose from, but if you’re looking for something very sophisticated, go with Fiverr.  Fortunately for me, I was looking for something simple.  So I chose my option and moved on to the next stage.

Like I said, this isn’t very sophisticated, so there were not very many options to make edits.  But I had an idea in my head and worked it all out.

Resourcefullness

There was not an ice cream cone shape that I liked, so I made my own by flipping an upside down cone shape, right side up, and making it skinnier.  Then I added a flower on top of the cone.  I researched colors and found the one’s that portrayed the message that I wanted and wallah, my logo was created.

I did create two different logos.  I wanted to conduct a test and allow my potential customers to decide which one they liked best.  I used Instagram and Facebook.  The one above won, obviously that makes the one below the loser.

Vista print gives you the option to purchase 3 different versions of the logo for $20, I asked my friend to create the final product using my design.  After some tweaks on my end and about 3 months (It’s ok, I’m on deployment, I could afford to be patient), the final product was finished.

Getting Your Logo Trademarked

Getting your logo trademarked is a very important stage in the logo process, one that I will go over next week…

Momma T

I am a single mom, a Naval Officer, and an attorney. I had my daughter during my second year of law school. With a baby on my hip, I pushed through the last year of school, passed the bar, and decided to run for Congress. One day my phone rang and I was told that I would be deploying for a year and I would have to leave my daughter behind.

So, after three deployments, one and half years of living overseas, and four and half years of driving both an aircraft carrier and an amphibious helicopter carrier, I would say good-bye to my little one, drop out of my Congressional race, and once again put on my marching boots.
