I know how much I love to read, but I also know how little time that I have to do so. If it’s true for me, I figured that it is true for you. Solution, an audiobook. I wouldn’t have thought that simply reading books would make me feel accomplished, but when your life is going in every direction and you’re forced to take showers and abandon the thought of a bath because you can’t even find the time to fill up the tub, finding time for reading wasn’t even in the realm of possibility.

I think that being a good parent requires that you find time for yourself. After all, you were you long before you were a parent. If you loose yourself, what will be left when your child moves on?

I decided to make reading my books easier by providing the chapters in both text form and in audio for your convenience. Below are weeks 1 and 2 of Vantage Point. I hope you enjoy it!

I’d heard of audiobooks before, but I was in law school and raising my baby alone, I didn’t have time additional reading. I thought that reading 100-200 pages of legal text was enough. My friend convinced me that I was being ridiculous, “The best minds in the world read hundreds of books a year, you think you’re special because your reading textbooks?” He was right. I needed to get back to my roots. I was losing myself and I didn’t even realize it.

How could I find time to sit down and read when I can barely find time to do the same for school? Enter audiobooks. He sent me a link to audible, but I soon learned that most public libraries offer free audiobooks to it’s members. Now, when I’m doing the dishes, brushing my teeth, cooking, baking, cleaning the house, commuting, you name it, I can be reading a book. Nothing makes commuting less stressful, than listening to an entertaining book.

So, 20 or 30 books later, I’m still going strong. I wish I had more time to listen, but, at least I’m getting somewhere. I’ve read books about everything from launching my own business to learning how to deal with stress. If parenting books are your thing, they are out there too. Every genre, every topic is out there in the audiobookphere just waiting for you to find them.

I am a single mom, a Naval Officer, and an attorney. I had my daughter during my second year of law school. With a baby on my hip, I pushed through the last year of school, passed the bar, and decided to run for Congress. One day my phone rang and I was told that I would be deploying for a year and I would have to leave my daughter behind.

So, after three deployments, one and half years of living overseas, and four and half years of driving both an aircraft carrier and an amphibious helicopter carrier, I would say good-bye to my little one, drop out of my Congressional race, and once again put on my marching boots.
